How COVID-19 Affected Surfing in Morocco

Surely enough, these are new times we’re living in. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed nearly everything about our daily lives — from how we travel, work, and connect, to how we think about the future. Like many others, we didn’t see it coming. But the stillness it forced upon us brought unexpected clarity. With international travel halted and surf plans postponed, we suddenly had time — time to reflect on the way we live, the goals we chase, and the people we may have taken for granted. For many of us, it was a moment of deep reconnection: with ourselves, with our families, and with the few friends who stayed close despite the distance. We learned to appreciate health, community, and even the quiet. And for surfers, the ocean became not just a destination but a symbol of freedom and hope. In this post, we reflect on what it meant to live — and surf — through a global pandemic, how Morocco’s surf scene was affected, and what lessons we’re taking forward into this new era of travel.

Now this in mind, we are ready to enter a new phase of having our dear people amongst us, we missed you and hopefully you missed us too, so far Morocco has done well keeping the transmission curve low, we already started vaccination procces over a month now, with the end of the vaccination campaign being projected toward middle april inshallah, for us in the surf camp in Morocco, we are ready to start again, with that few things has to be kept in mind in case you decide to come and surf with us in beautiful Taghazout.

as of the date that this article has been written, Moroccan government has banned flights from the following countries : Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Turkye until the 21st of March, flights coming from France, Spain and countries are still allowed to land on Moroccan ground.

Travel Requirements :

Travelling to Morocco will require a hotel reservation that we would happily provide for you, as well as a PCR test made in the last 72 hours before boarding, keep in mind that children below 11 years are exempt,

All our guests must also complete a passenger health form online at ONDA then print and sign the form, to be presented upon arrival in Morocco.

For countries who only allow essential travel, please check with me personnally through chat or whatsapp, there is few ways i know to get you here if you are a hard headed surfer who desperately needs some surfing.

How is the Surfing Situation in Taghazout Bay ?

For now we are lucky to have few spots open, we can count in between them Banana Point, Anza, Imsouane, Desert Beach & Point, Anchor Point & Tamri.

With my long time experience in being a surf coach and guide, finding waves would be a fairly easy task, our affordable and all inclusive surf packages will make travelling to Morocco in these times a stress free experience.

There is no lockdown in Tamraght, life is still pretty easy and chilled, we can still go hangout in our favorite spot Babakoul, go for a hike to the mountain behind the house and walk freely within the village to experience a little bubble that hasn’t been affected so much by COVID – 19, all restaurants and coffee shops can still accomodate customers, although a curefew has been set at 21h00, which is still fine cause surfing will make you so dead that hanging out in our star spangled terrasse will be a much better option than being outside.

Weather wise, it’s still sunny as ever, it’s even going warmer now with the swell consistency dropping to a 70% for April, May and June, you know what that means, it’s time to bring your boardshorts and shorties, we gonna go further up the road and hit Tamri, Tifnit & Imsouane to get away from the summer crowds, more sunset surfs as well to compensate for the lack of surf spots available to us, and i shouldn’t forget, Agadir has been blessed with really good rains this year, so Paradise Valley is filled up with water, Imouzzer waterfalls too, so in case and god forbid you are fed up with surfing, i’ll happily drive you to discover the back country, a rural area that has been seldom seen by people coming here, were you can find the deep and true Morocco.

Last Word

Am aware that last year has been difficult for all our beloved people, it has been also for us, but as in the words of Eddie Vedder, no matter how cold is the winter, there is always springtime ahead, know that we think of you and everybody who set foot on this house, and in case you should think and want to have a goat tagine in Tamri with us, have a surf session with Sohaib, follow that with an epic BBQ on the rooftop and jam some tunes and just talk, let it out, spill them beans and guts, tell us how that hell of a year has been, i’ll be more than happy to have you in Salt House Morocco again and share both sides of the stroy.
