When is the Best Time to Surf in Morocco

If you’ve visited Morocco or Taghazout Bay before, you’ve probably wondered whether this North African surf paradise is a year‑round destination or if there’s a magic window for scoring waves. Morocco’s long Atlantic coastline delivers everything from longboard peelers to heaving point breaks, and the seasons play a big role in shaping those experiences. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect throughout the year.

Winter  (October to March)

Winter is when Morocco truly lights up. From late October through March, storms in the North Atlantic send consistent, powerful swells down the coast. These pulses wake up famous right‑hand points such as Anchor Point, Killer Point, Draculas and Boilers. The waves are bigger and more reliable, and lineups tend to be quieter than in summer. If you’re an intermediate or advanced surfer looking for long walls and the occasional barrel, winter should be your first choice. Pack a good wetsuit (3/2 mm or 4/3 mm depending on your tolerance) and be ready for cooler mornings and evenings.

Summer  (June to September)

Summer brings a different vibe. Swell consistency drops off, which makes the lineup more inviting for beginners and improvers. Our guides know which swell magnets to hit spots like Tamri and Tifnit often deliver surprisingly fun waves when the rest of the coast goes quiet. The ocean warms up to around 18‑22 °C (64‑72 °F), so you can finally ditch the neoprene and surf in boardshorts. Summer sessions are about playful peaks, learning new manoeuvres and enjoying the laid‑back atmosphere

Shoulder seasons (April – May & September)

In spring and early autumn, conditions can be unpredictable but rewarding. Early autumn (late September into October) often sees the first solid swells of the season with mild crowds and warm water, an ideal mix for most surfers. Spring (April–May) may offer smaller but clean swells and is a great time for intermediate surfers looking for mellow point‑break sessions without the winter intensity. Keeping an eye on the forecast and being flexible will pay off during these transitional months.

Which season suits you?

There’s no single “best” time to surf Morocco. It all depends on your skill level, what kind of waves you enjoy and how much adventure you’re after. Winter delivers power and prestige; summer promises warmth and fun; the shoulder seasons offer variety.
